The best photos for ordering your animal portrait should  be taken using natural lighting, without a flash.  Indoor pets can be photographed in front of a large window.   Photos taken at the animal's level will be less distorted. Also please remember that this is the only reference I will have to create your pet portrait, so make sure that you are happy with how the photo represents the actual spirit and likeness of your animal companion.
